FAQ

Questions, answered the way we review

Short answers to what readers ask most — all of them from the same position: judge it by the numbers, and let the marketing copy scroll past.

How do you decide what makes a product good?
We write the spec before we look at a single product. For lamps it is color temperature consistency and glare control; for mattresses it is firmness zoning, edge support and heat retention. The spec comes from how people actually use the room and the product, not from marketing categories. A product is judged by the numbers against that spec — nothing else.
Why do the lumens on the box not match the light in my room?
Because the box lists average initial lumens, measured in a lab sphere at the start of the bulb's life. Fixtures, shades, dimmers and beam angle all cut delivered light before it reaches your desk or ceiling. Our Spec Check on lumen claims walks through the drop-offs and how to estimate what a room actually needs.
Is warm white always the right choice?
No — the right Kelvin depends on the room and the time of day you use it. 2700K suits living rooms and bedrooms in the evening; 3000K works for kitchens and bathrooms where tasks need a bit more clarity; 4000K belongs in workspaces, not hallways. Our color temperature guide gives the room-by-room breakdown.
Do you buy the products you review?
Where a physical purchase is part of the review, we buy at retail like any customer. When a review is built on published specifications, lab data or aggregated verified owner feedback, we say so explicitly and link the source. We do not accept free units in exchange for coverage, and brands never see a review before it publishes.
Can I trust the owner feedback you cite?
We treat owner feedback as evidence with a weight, not as proof. It is used to confirm or contradict what the specs predict — squeaks, coating wear, sagging — and we look for patterns across many verified reviews rather than quoting one strong opinion. Third-party lab data always outranks anecdotes when both exist.
What is the 'Room by Room' column?
One room per guide: the light problem that room has, the order to wire and layer fixtures in, and the mistakes we see most. Hallways, home offices, closets — each one ends with a setup you can copy with fixture types and spacing numbers, not vague advice about ambiance.
What is the 'Spec Check' column?
A single product category's key spec, taken apart: what the number on the box measures, what it does not, and how to translate it into a decision. Every Spec Check ends the same way — the three questions to ask a seller before you pay. It is the column for anyone who wants the math behind the pick.
Do affiliate links change your verdicts?
No. Some links earn us a commission when you buy through them, at no extra cost to you — that is disclosed next to the links. The scoring happens before any link is placed, and the picks that earn nothing are listed alongside the ones that do. If the two ever conflicted, the spec would win.
How should I use this site before buying?
Start from your room, not from a product name. Read the room guide to learn what the space needs, then check the product reviews for the specs that match it. If a listing cannot answer the three questions at the end of a Spec Check, treat the silence as your answer and move on.
